Apple HLS Video Podcast Tracking

What It Is, Why It Matters, and How Podscribe Supports It

1. What is Apple HLS?

Apple HLS (HTTP Live Streaming) is Apple’s new video delivery format within the Apple Podcasts app.

Historically, podcasts were distributed as audio files (MP3s) via RSS feeds. With HLS, Apple enables:

  • Video playback directly in Apple Podcasts
  • Adaptive streaming (different video qualities based on connection)
  • A shift from a single audio file → a streaming video “playlist” (manifest file)

In simple terms:

HLS turns podcast episodes into streaming video experiences inside Apple Podcasts.

2. Why This Matters

Apple HLS represents a major evolution in podcast consumption:

📺 Podcasting is becoming video-first

  • More shows are publishing video alongside audio
  • Apple is now a native video platform, not just audio

📈 Measurement is changing

  • Traditional podcast measurement relies on RSS downloads
  • HLS introduces streaming-based consumption, which behaves differently

🎯 Industry implication

  • Buyers, publishers, and platforms are all adapting
  • Measurement standards are still being defined and implemented

3. Current Industry Status

Apple HLS is early-stage and still evolving:

  • Adoption is opt-in by publishers (not universal yet)
  • Different hosting platforms (Acast, Transistor, etc.) are:
    • At different stages of support
    • Implementing HLS in different ways
  • There is no consistent, standardized data flow yet for measurement

Most importantly:

👉 Podcast hosting platforms must enable and send HLS data

👉 Apple is not the bottleneck — the ecosystem is still catching up

4. Where Podscribe Fits

Podscribe sits in the measurement layer — and our visibility depends on how data is passed through the ecosystem.

✅ What works today

Dynamic Ad Insertion (DAI): Fully supported

  • No change in measurement
  • Podscribe continues to receive listener data as expected
  • Attribution and reporting function normally

👉 For DAI campaigns: business as usual

⚠️ What is evolving

Baked-in (host-read / embedded) ads in HLS video:

Currently:

  • HLS video streams do not pass through RSS in the same way
  • Podscribe’s prefix is not triggered on video playback
  • As a result, we cannot yet see those impressions

👉 This is not a Podscribe limitation — it’s due to:

  • How HLS delivers video (via manifest files, not MP3 downloads)
  • Hosting platforms not yet sending that data downstream

5. How Apple HLS Measurement Will Be Enabled

For full measurement to work, the following must happen:

1. Hosting platforms must adapt

They need to:

  • Send log-level consumption data for HLS streams
  • Or route video requests through measurable endpoints

2. Data must flow to measurement platforms

Once enabled:

  • Podscribe will ingest HLS consumption data
  • Measurement will extend to video impressions

3. Standardization across the ecosystem

  • Alignment across Apple, hosters, and measurement providers
  • Consistent methodologies for reporting

👉 Podscribe is actively working with partners across the ecosystem to enable this.

6. Key Takeaways for Clients

  • Apple HLS = the future of video podcasting on Apple
  • DAI campaigns are fully measurable today
  • Baked-in ad measurement is temporarily limited for HLS video
  • This is an industry-wide transition, not a platform-specific issue
  • Podscribe is actively collaborating with partners to support full visibility
